3 Simple Steps to Healthier Water by Jesse Metzger

Here comes the drum roll. The long-awaited answer to the question, "is bottled water better than tap?" And the answer is...well, do you want the long or the short version?
Of course, some would argue over this. But more recent studies are pointing towards "no", blowing the cover on bottled water, which has millions of loyal patrons on its side. If you are one such patron, I hate to disappoint, but behind the labels featuring waterfalls and energized fitness enthusiasts that we associate with purity, lies something not much better than the water that spews from our kitchen faucets.
I was doubtful at first. But when I was presented with the evidence, it suddenly all made sense. Much of bottled water is sold under the pretense that it is healthier than tap, and the reason this is possible is due to lax FDA regulations on the sale of bottled water. It exempts bottled water sold within the same state from which it comes from any scrutiny, which accounts for about 2/3 of all bottled water sales. Furthermore (and this one really blew my mind), the FDA regulations that apply to bottled water are less strict than the EPA's regulations for tap water! This means some bottled water is actually inferior quality than tap water. Unbelievable!
With that information, I ask you the question, is bottled water better than tap? I'll let you draw your own conclusion. (Pause) Now, assuming that you are convinced, I'll continue on to make some suggestions on what to do next.
1. Is bottled water better than tap? Heck, no! In case we haven't already established it, I would like to reiterate. Don't trust bottled water! Unfortunately, when you pay for a service or good, you don't always get what you (thought you) paid for, and bottled water is a big time offender.
2. Take matters into your own hands! If you can't trust the FDA, the EPA, or the manufacturers of bottled water, who can you trust? I'm going to answer that with a question. Ever hear the saying, "it's easier to trust yourself than to trust someone else?" Well, apply that to your water consumption. You may be wondering what exactly this entails, which is described in step 3.
3. Start looking for an in-home water filtration system. It's really the only practical solution to the problem. For as low as a couple hundred dollars a year, you can do your own quality assurance at home. You should also consider investing in a shower filter to prevent skin absorption and inhalation of harmful chemicals. Bet you hadn't thought of that! Is bottled water better than tap? While all signs point to no, I have given you yet another reason to not become or remain a sucker for bottled water -- it does not address the whole issue of coming into contact with contaminated water.
There you have it -- the three simple steps to healthier water. If nothing else, I hope you have gained knowledge of bottled water vs. tap water, and have decided to protect yourself by purchasing the right home water filtration system. Once you do, you can check "bottled water" off your grocery list for good!
